Personal Safety

Any issues about feeling safe? I know you took the self-defense classes. But is it just common sense about being out at night and things like that?

Yes, it’s generally about common sense. We’re extra aware in crowds (for pickpockets) and in taxis (especially at night and wee morning hours). We lock our bags when traveling, and keep them under our seats on the bus.

I am super glad that I took the self defense course at Home Alive, as it taught me simply to be aware of my surroundings, and gave me some simple techniques for defending myself. It’s a good thing to have in the back of your head.

p.s. Regarding taxis. I’ve only had one really freaky incident, and that was with Mary & Lisa. We ended up bailing on the taxi and catching another one.

Some specific things we use for securing our stuff:

  • Small TSA bag locks. Scott also uses key rings on his backpack… These all about detering/slowing down pick pocketing.
  • Laptop locking cord. We use these to lock our laptops to furniture in hotel rooms.
  • A basic whistle for keychain.
  • Door jam alarm. We don’t use this, but I would if I were traveling alone.

Scott has also done a lot of work to secure the data on our computers. He’s handy like that…
