I’m really tired of answering the question of where I am from… “Los Estados Unidos” doesn’t exactly roll of the tongue. We also have to correct people when we say “Seattle, Washington”, because they automatically think of DC. We tell them that no, Washington State is on the other side of the country near Canada. Most of the time we get nods and blank stares in return.
Anyway. We’re headed home in just a few weeks, and I needed something for the letter E.
I will be happy to be on EEUU soil again. (EEUU is the abbreviation for Los Estados Unidos. The letters are doubled for some reason.) I haven’t exactly flipped to become a proud, patriotic, flag waving, citizen. But I have come to appreciate that I was raised in a country and a household with electricity and running water. The fact that the EEUU supports most of it’s citizens in their pursuit of life, liberty and happiness is an amazing feat.

I finally looked up why it is EEUU – the letters are doubled because it is plural, like SSHH for bathrooms (servicios higienicos). Ah, you learn something new everyday!
That is awesome! I guess I could have done a little research all along.
Very good to know.
I thought it was doubled because European Union would also be EU. Nice to learn something.
I actually thought of you this morning when the taxi driver asked me where I was from and the first thing I thought to tell him was “los Estados Unidos.” I’m getting the little Spanish, little Setswan and little Sesotho I know all mixed up.
