Thinking about leaving Arequipa has inspired a few alphabet posts.

El Misti was hidden from us for the first month or so after arriving in Arequipa because it was still the rainy season. We caught glimpses of it’s form every once in a while, but the top was always obscured by dark clouds until sometime in February.

Actually, I remember the moment I first saw it unobscured and washed in sunlight. We were crossing the Puente Grau (a bridge) on our way home from Spanish. It was picturesque Arequipa.

I’ve always said the mountains in the Pacific Northwest pale in comparison to the mountains I grew up with in both my front and back yards in Utah. El Misti beats them all. It’s huge, with a peak of 19,000 feet. And I can’t help but gaze at it out our window, looming over the city. Totally amazing.

By the way, there are WAY better photos of it here on Flickr, like this one.
