Mary and Lisa left for Seattle yesterday! Their visit last week was super fun, except for getting sick and losing my passport in the end! So, Scott and I are headed to Lima tomorrow to get a replacement passport. Wish us luck!
In the mean time, I have a bunch of recap posts ready to go. Enjoy.
Arequipa, April 4th thru 6th
We spent the first few days in Arequipa, mainly eating all things Peruvian.
For dinner one night, we all tried cuy for the first time. Lisa had named our cuy friends “Mr. Whiskers”, or “Señor Bigote” in Spanish. When the adobe cuy dishes came out, Scott was pretty sure one hunk of the meat on the plate was the cuy head. It turned out not to be the head, but I think everyone was a little taken aback when it actually came down to eating the little guys.
Not to mention it was also very hard to remove the meat from the bones. We found out later that we should have gone with a more traditional fried/baked cuy, which would have been crispier and easier to eat. Mmm… next time?
The group also spent one afternoon preparing ceviche with our Spanish teacher, Ericka, and her son, Fahed. Scott and I had prepared ceviche before, so it was fun to learn some additional tricks this time around. Mary and Lisa seemed to enjoy it… especially making the Pisco Sours.
We also did some touristing around Arequipa, including a visit to the Santa Catalina convent, the Mirador de Carmen Alto (the mountains were out!), and a walk around downtown and the San Camilo market.
