I’m considering doing ABC blog posts for our trip… Inspired by my older sis’ blog during her time in Botswana. I can’t think of a letter A yet, so I’m going to start with B. (We all know that A is still the superior letter… But don’t tell Scott I said that.)

When we were first getting settled into our apartment, a whopping two weeks ago, we didn’t know what to do with our garbage. We had one full bag that needed to go OUT, but there were no garbage cans on the premises. Well, that afternoon I was ready to ask our landlord, when a bell went off in my head. This is our garbage pick up system…

These men go around the city, ringing a bell. When you hear it, it means they are coming to pick up your garbage. So, assuming you’re home, you take your garbage out to the street and leave it for them. I haven’t figured out their schedule yet… it feels random. But I’ve also seen bags left out in the morning, in anticipation of a pick up that day, so there must be a schedule.

Our landlords did clarify a few things for us… First, the district of Yanahuara pays for the garbage collection. (Yanahuara is maybe the size of Capitol Hill.) And, second, the bell is preferred to blaring music coming from garbage trucks in other districts.

Now to figure out what to do with our pile-up of glass bottles. We haven’t seen them being thrown away, so maybe there’s a way to recycle them?

SparklingAllison’s blog post is brought to you by the letter “B”.
