Went camping this weekend… it was a great way to spend my birthday. The original plan was to go to White River Falls campground, but it was full when we arrived on Friday night. Luckily there was another campground a mile down the road called Grasshopper Meadows that was empty except for one other camper. I’d recommend either campground, as they’re located about 10 miles down a gravel/dirt road… Pretty much as remote as you can get for car camping. No RVs. Pack in your own water and pack out your trash. And you get used to the vault toilets after the first day.
Be careful at White River Falls, you might die there. At least that’s what the NWSource write up and a few fellow visitors told us… And once we finally found the White River Falls on Saturday it was really clear why there were so many warnings.
Now, White River Falls is actually a series of waterfalls starting at the end of Forest Road 6400. The end of the road is also a trail head for some peaks and other points of interest in the area. Not to be confused by the trails though… the only falls to be seen from that location are right there next to the parking lot. They seemed harmless enough… Very beautiful actually, viewed from a foot bridge over the river (top right).
We found the danger we were looking for back at the White River Falls campground. The falls here are located toward the back of the campground (you almost have to walk through people’s sites to get there).
The view is from the top down… A fairly wide river narrows into a 4 foot wide channel just before the plummeting maybe 50 feet? No guard rail. I can see curious onlookers getting too close and falling in. (See middle right picture of someone chancing death.)
Other birthday highlights:
- Heineken mini keg (I can’t wait until a beer with alcohol in it comes out with something like this.)
- Sushi with Scott on Sunday after unpacking and taking a shower!
- Desk was decorated at work today, love, from “the birthday fairy”
- Birthday lunch and good MBA conversation with a coworker
